In this topic we could look at different countries around the world and the pupils could experience buying tickets, packing bags, selecting appropriate clothing and using different modes of transport. We could compare old vehicles, trains and boats and look at different types of vehicles. Pupils may build vehicles, control vehicles and try to follow directions. We may practice travelling on foot and following a map with instructions both pictorial and written. We will need to practise crossing roads safely and become aware of dangers when travelling. We could participate in role play and use the immersive room to learn and rehearse scripts to use in different environments that we have travelled to.

Food

All living things need food to survive. Through this topic we could experience food from around the world and find out from which country it originates. The pupils can study farms and oceans recognising familiar everyday foods. We could follow recipes, using measuring equipment, handling tools and cutlery. In an outside space we could grow our own food, planting vegetables and fruit. We could then taste different foods, touching foods and smelling foods, using all our senses. The pupils could then participate in role play, going shopping, using money and selecting and identifying foods. We could then look at food used in celebrations and festivals, sharing food with friends and even cooking for someone else. We could ask ourselves why we need food. What happens to food when we eat it? And Sort different food groups, learning about healthy eating and making good choices. In the community we could practise our social skills when eating out and using a restaurant or café.

 Autumn

Toys

We can all learn through play. In this topic we could investigate how we used to play looking at old toys and how children entertained themselves in the past. We could play with our favourite toys and play with our peers, turn taking and sharing. The pupils could participate in imaginary play and role play, taking on a variety of roles, e.g. doctors using dolls. We could practise our dressing skills using soft toys and dolls. We may be able to design and make toys using mixed media and make musical instruments to accompany our singing. We could make up new games with rules and matching objects. We could promote physical exercise through rounders, parachute games, and cricket. We may want to know why are games good for us? What happens to our bodies when we exercise? We will be able to improve our fine motor skills by using peg boards, play doh, artwork and board games such as Pop up Pirates or Ker Plunk.
