Pioneer History

Our Story

Pioneer School was formally established in 2003 after a journey dating back to 2000. Pioneer was formerly two separate special needs schools in Basildon – Elmbrook School and Moat House School, both based in Church Road.

Elmbrook School catered for children with profound and multiple learning difficulties and complex learning difficulties aged 3 – 19 years and Moat House School catered for children with moderate learning difficulties aged 5 – 16.

The two schools were run separately By Mr Horsted from January 2000 before they amalgamated in September 2003 to form Pioneer School based on the existing two campuses of Elmbrook and Moat House Schools.

Then, in January 2009, after many years of fundraising and planning the school moved to new, purpose built premises on the current site. Planning for further development, however, continued funded by the Building School for the Future programme, resulting in a further new wing opening in September 2011. The facilities this produced are of high quality and provide state of the art resources to support the curriculum and student learning.

Pioneer became an academy in June 2012 as part of Academies Enterprise Trust.
